Growing up Mikaela spent a lot of her time knotting friendship bracelets and trying to sell them at her neighborhood lemonade stand. She remembers her mom always used to say, “that’s like macrame,” although she had no idea what that meant at 9 years old.
As she got older she found herself being drawn to the boho aesthetic and all things crochet, knit, & fringe.
One Covid summer she circled back to her roots and started making friendship bracelets again for friends and family, and started selling them through social media after the pandemic left her unemployed. She lacked a sense of direction or life plan at that time, but always knew there was a small business drive within her that she tried twice before. With ambition and a constant yearning to try something different, she researched different materials, macrame knots & supplies. She attempted a wallhanging, but then watched YouTube videos on how to make ornaments that Christmas. She also looked up a how-to for a macrame camera strap after searching for something like it for herself but having no luck. A camera strap grew into keychains, coasters, and bottle totes, then eventually to her favorite projects, crossbody satchel bags.
Being a beach kid her whole life, she wanted her business to represent a beachy, boho vibe, just like her personal style. So, sea spirit design co. was born! Today she has been running with sea spirit for about 4 years and counting. Each day brings a new opportunity and sense of refreshment being in the maker community. The talent of fellow artisans and creative minds is one of her favorite parts of this journey. Being able to showcase her creations she made with her own hands & free creative mind without someone telling her, “you can’t do that” or “it should be like this” is a close second- and she has expressed she is so very happy to be able do that here at The Collective at Boho House!
